Does bread make you feel bloated?

I hear this complaint on a daily basis, bread being the main culprit for bloating and the general feeling of low energy and feeling sluggish after eating it.

Do you have any of the below symptoms from consuming bread?

1. Digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhoea and even constipation.

2. Chicken like skin on the back of your arms.

3. Fatigue, brain fog or feeling tired after eating a meal that contains gluten.

4. Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma or Multiple sclerosis.

5. Neurologic symptoms such as dizziness or feeling of being off balance.

6. Hormone imbalances such as PMS, PCOS or unexplained infertility.

7. Headaches

8. Diagnosis of chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. These diagnoses simply indicate your conventional doctor cannot pin point the cause of your fatigue or pain.

9. Inflammation, swelling or pain in your joints such as fingers, knees or hips.

10. Mood issues such as anxiety, depression, mood swings and ADD.

These are symptoms of a gluten intolerance.

What actually is gluten?

How many of you actually know what gluten is, apart from the fact it makes you unwell?

Gluten is a protein that’s made of glutenin and gliadin molecules, its what holds and binds cakes and bakery goods together.

It gives foods the spongy texture. The word gluten is latin and derives from the word glue.

Clever eh?

Let’s have a look at the history of bread.

(Brief so stay with this)

History

In 1911 40% of British people’s diet was made up of bread. It was this that was blamed for widespread poor health. Modern nutritional science confirms the accuracy of this assessment.

The then poor diet resulted in a range of illnesses. These illnesses were called ‘wasting diseases’ by the victorians. The white flour at the time was usually laced with alum, which made bad flour look whiter.

Did you know that certain reports claim that white bread is actually worse since 1911. There are secret adulterants (Enzymes) that are added into our bread and that do not have to be included on our labels.

THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE!

We now have no idea what is being added and we just know we react now by way of bloating, some more severe reactions can also occur.

How can low quality bread and even lower quality since 1911, still make up 50% of the average British diet?

CRAZY!

Back in the 1900’s wholegrain bread was a sign of poverty and white bread was classed as…. well higher class.

Refined white flour bread was sought after by the elite. It wasn’t until ” The Daily Mail” spearheaded a campaign to get rid of it and in world war 11 it was actually banned.

RESULT!

Britons were healthier in 1947 due to the reactions of wholegrain bread, but by the end of world war 11 it was back again legalised and in 50 % of our diets.

What is in our bread today is worse than it has ever been. It includes the following….

Salt, cheap fats, alum, lime powder, and bleaching bread when it has actually gone bad. So even when its bad we think it is fresh:(

YUM!

Too Much Wheat or Grain Converts Into Fat

In other words, when you eat too much bread, pasta, and any other grain products, you are sending a hormonal message, via insulin, to your body that says “store fat.”

So another reason to cut back if the above wasn’t enough.

If you want to keep “bread’ in your diet but you want to remain healthy then why not try compromising?

What about trying the below recipes?

1/Banana Bread

Seriously tasty! Easy to make!

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs (I use farm eggs)

  • ½ cup melted coconut oil

  • ⅓ cup organic honey or maple syrup

  • ¼ cup almond /cashew milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 medium bananas)

  • 1¾ cups almond flour (Ground almonds)

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ tsp himalayan salt

1/In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

2/In a large bowl, beat eggs, oil, honey, almond/cashew milk and vanilla for 2 minutes. Stir in the bananas, almond flour mixture

3/Pour batter into a greased loaf dish , sprinkle with some more cinnamon, or banana slices (optional) Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, slice and enjoy!

TIP!

I used muffin tins and my children then have a “go to” healthy snack that has protein and fats in, without the nasties.

So what other breads cane tasty and easy to make?

What about Tahini bread?

  • 6 Tbsp. organic tahini

  • 4 tbsp raw honey or maple syrup

  • 4 organic eggs (farm eggs)

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/4 cup almond flour

  • 2 tbsp grass-fed butter melted

  • Same method as above.

  • Easy and you can play with the ingredients to suit your taste. Why not ask the family what they like and make a bread with it.

    We have tried

  • Apricot bread

  • Mixed dried Fruit bread

  • Feta cheese and sun-dried tomato bread

All using almond flour/coconut flour/peanut flour as alternatives.
