NAILS NAILS NAILS

I am talking about the nails on your fingertips, not these nails…..

Ok, so what do your nails say about you, in terms of your health?

Did you know that a person’s nails show’s a lot about what is going inside in terms of nutrition?

Let’s take a look at some of the issues that can show in the nails but correlate with the body.

Time to face facts, your nails are far more than a platform for bright colours and nail art.

1/If your nail is discoloured or thickened it could be a sign of anemia or diabetes or liver and kidney issues. Please bear in mind if you use acrylics and gels then discolouration can also happen.

2/ Healthy nails grow, on average 3.5 millimeters (mm) a month, but even this is influenced by your nutritional status. In general certain medications, trauma, chronic disease, and the aging process itself can affect the growth cycle.

3/ Thyroid disease in particular hypothyroidism can cause brittle nails, be aware this may also be due to a deficiency in vitamins A and C or the B vitamin biotin. (Usually, hair is brittle too)

4/Small white spots on your nails are usually the result of a nail trauma. They are not usually a cause for concern and will fade or grow out on their own. Check for fungal infections too though.

5/Ridges can be age factor but check vitamin B12 and magnesium as these may be deficient.

So there are a few points to consider, have a look below at some of the FYI if like me you enjoy colour on your nails, it’s good to minimise the damage that can be caused.

FYI

Healthy sources of protein like whey protein, free-range eggs, and grass-fed meat, are important for the health of your nails. For example, grass-fed beef is a good source of zinc, which is necessary for making proteins like those found in your nails.

Antioxidants and vitamins, and minerals found in leafy greens, berries, and other whole foods will also benefit your nail health. Biotin, vitamin B7, is one example.

Your body needs biotin for metabolizing fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids, but it’s also well known for its role in strengthening your hair.

Keep your diet healthy and balanced and make sure your multivitamin supplement contains exactly what it says it does on the pot.

If using gels or acrylic please note…..

In some cases, the electric file can slip and scuff up your skin, which is then dipped into a pot of powdered chemicals. Especially if the chemicals are not a true gel manicure, they can get into the abrasion and migrate, causing nerve damage.

Be aware that is all……

  • If your salon uses bottles in unmarked containers.
  • The products smell unusually strong or have a strange odor.
  • Your skin is abraded or cut during the procedure.
  • The instruments used on you are not sterilized.
  • Your skin or nails hurt during or after the nail service.
  • You see swelling, redness or other signs of infection.

Go to a salon or use a technician you trust and that has your best interests at heart.

Have a great day

Maria
