What is lost from sweat?

What are you losing in your sweat?

We exercise to stay fit and healthy, and because we know it is the only way to achieve the body shape we want. I use exercising as an example but sweating even just on a dog walk or brisk walk up a staircase is the same, isn’t it?

Is sweat all the same?

NO!

  • Sweat produced when you exercise comes from your eccrine glands while sweat produced when you’re stressed or anxious is produced by your apocrine glands

  • “Stress sweat” smells different than “exercise stress” and leads to a heightened state of alertness

I have seen many people training at the gym with barely any sweat being released.

I always thought I was not training hard enough if I didn’t sweat, therefore neither is anyone else.

I was wrong! It is rare, but it happens;)

Why Do Some People Sweat More Than Others?

You’re born with anywhere between 2 million and 4 million sweat glands, and the number of glands you have will determine, in part, how much you sweat.

While females generally have more sweat glands than males, male glands tend to be more active and produce more sweat.

How much you sweat, or what’s referred to as your rate of sweat, is determined by a number of factors including temperature, humidity, and even how fit you are.

Yoga is not a class you usually sweat in unless it’s hot yoga, but you truly feel the internal burn. Everyone is different as we are all aware, what do we release in our sweat?  READ ON …

What happens when we sweat?

  • Your body releases sweat in order to regulate its own body temperature, this prevents you from overheating.
  • Sweating also helps your body to eliminate toxins, this supports proper immune function and helps prevent diseases that are related to toxic overload.

What does our sweat contain?

OK so sweat produced from exercise or overheating is made up primarily of water and salt. We lose a minimal amount of toxins too.

With that in mind though heavy sweating causes your body to lose valuable fluids and electrolytes, you should be sure to stay well hydrated if you’ve been heavily sweating, replace your electrolytes naturally by drinking coconut water or water mixed with Himalayan salt.

CALCIUM

This was a study performed to see how much calcium was lost in athletes while playing their chosen game. This particular study was basketball but football for example when a lot of cardio is needed will also be similar.

This one player was asked to wear a cotton vest throughout the game, then the sweat at the end was measured and the calcium lost in the sweat also measured.

The reason this study was performed in the first place was down to all the stress fractures the players were getting and the risk of osteoarthritis later in life.

The results ………..

It was calculated that they were losing an average of 422 milligrams of calcium during three days’ training. Measurements of bone density showed that the average player lost 3.8 percent of bone mineral density during the three months between preseason and midseason.

In layman terms that’s …….

ALSO BE AWARE OF……..

…..Soft Drinks

Animal studies show that phosphorus in soda weakens your bones by promoting the loss of calcium. And diet sodas might even be worse.

Researchers found that human parathyroid hormone concentrations rose strongly following diet soda consumption, leading to a greater release of calcium from bone.

So what is the answer?

Make sure you have plenty of nutrients in your after activity snacks.

You can’t separate out one nutrient without affecting the actions of the others.

For example:

  • Vitamin D maintains skeletal calcium balance by promoting calcium absorption in your intestines.
  • Calcium and phosphate depend upon Vitamin D for bone formation.
  • Vitamin K2 helps to cement the calcium you absorb into the bone matrix rather than depositing it on the inside of your blood vessels leading to atherosclerosis.
  • Magnesium is an important mineral that your body needs to build a strong bone matrix.

Imagine the effects on your bones if one of these nutrients is missing, or not present in the right amount!

This can be happening in your bones for years without you even knowing.

Make sure you….

…REPLACE.
